Cue the fireworks, it’s time to party with our friends across the pond. Celebrate America’s birthday by throwing a fun-filled 4th of July event.

Stars & stripes

Pay tribute to the good old US of A with themed tableware, American flags and bunting, and balloons in red, white and blue. String up stars and set down stripes to complete the patriotic décor.

Fast Food

America is the fast food capital of the world, so it’s only right to serve up burgers, fried chicken and hot dogs (just to name a few). Our NYC style hot dog recipe is sure to go down a treat…

(Serves 8)

  • 8 large frankfurters
  • 8 hot dog buns
  • Chopped pickles
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 4 large onions
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • 4 tsp American mustard
  • 4 tsp ketchup
  • 4 tsp tomato puree
  • 3 tsp white wine vinegar

1. Heat oil in a frying pan over a medium heat and cook the diced onions for 10 mins until golden.

2. Stir in cinnamon, chilli powder, mustard, ketchup, tomato purée, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, 3 tbsp water and a pinch of salt. Simmer for 2 mins until the onions are saucy, adding a splash more water if they seem dry. (Mixture will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. Reheat over a low heat before serving, adding a splash of water to loosen as needed.)

3. Cook frankfurters for 10 mins on the barbecue or in a griddle pan, or for 8 mins in a pan of simmering water.

4. Toast buns (if preferred) and add frankfurter. Spoon over the onions and pickles, and smother with extra mustard and ketchup to serve.

5. Top with USA flag food picks for an extra special touch.

Cool Cakes

(Serves 10)

  • 110g softened butter
  • 110g caster sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 110g self-raising flour
  • 1⁄2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp milk
  • Buttercream Ingredients:
  • 300g icing sugar
  • 150g softened butter

1. Heat the oven to 180C and line a cupcake tin with 10 cases (themed if possible). To make the sponge, tip the butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla, flour, baking powder and milk into a large mixing bowl and mix until smooth.

2. Divide the batter between the cases and bake for 15 mins until golden. Leave on a wire rack to cool.

3. While the cakes are cooling, make the buttercream by beating together the icing sugar, butter and vanilla until pale and fluffy. Mix in extra milk if the icing feels too stiff.

4. Pipe or spread the buttercream on top of the cakes and scatter with star sprinkles and/or red and white metallic edible balls for decoration.

Fun & Games

Beer pong is the ultimate frat party drinking game, so lay out your cups and perfect your aim! The idea is to throw your ball into your opponent’s cup. If you score, they drink, and if you lose, then you better get ready to sup up! Set up juice pong for the little ones so they feel involved too. Feel like partying all night? Buy a beer keg and do a keg stand – in true American style.

When the summer sky gets dark, set the night alight with sparklers and fireworks – it wouldn’t be 4th of July without them!

Also known as Independence Day, 4th of July is a federal holiday in the United States, commemorating the Declaration of Independence, when American colonies got freedom from Great Britain.
