This very important week takes place between 5th- 11th February 2024.

Children’s Mental Health Week was set up by children’s mental health charity Place2Be and shines a spotlight on the importance of children and young people’s mental health.

Nurturing Young Minds

In an era where the hustle and bustle of daily life often overshadows the importance of our mental wellbeing, Children’s Mental Health Week serves as a reminder that the youngest members of our society need to look after their emotional health too.

Make an event of it and try practising a different activity at home each day of the week, which will promote positive mental health.

Creating a nurturing environment starts with open communication, try sitting with your little one to do some letter writing or journaling about their thoughts and feelings. You can also encourage children to express their feelings through art or a simple conversation.

Mindfulness and relaxation techniques are invaluable tools for children to manage stress. Simple, age- appropriate practices such as deep-breathing can empower children to regain control over their thoughts and emotions and can be done before bed.

Physical Activity

Physical activities play a pivotal role in mental health. Try a fun and child-friendly home workout, or a stroll around your neighbourhood after dinner or before school. Spur on your kids to choose a sport of choice which will not only help them to release feel-good endorphins, but will help them to form friendships and bonds.

Community Counts

Building a sense of belonging within their local community contributes to a child’s overall wellbeing. Helping charities such as food banks will not only make your youngster appreciate what they have, but will give them a sense of helping others in need. Ask your child to see if any neighbours need help with shopping, cleaning or gardening, to help them strengthen bonds with those around them.

By instilling healthy habits at home and within the community, children can feel empowered and are more likely to have a mentally healthy future.
