National Old Stuff Day

National Old Stuff Day

Something Different

National Old Stuff Day is celebrated annually on 2nd March, and offers the perfect opportunity to breathe new life into your old belongings.

In a world where we’re becoming increasingly focused on sustainability, here we explore creative ways you can repurpose, swap or sell your old possessions.

Host A Swap Shop

Organise an item-swapping event at home or somewhere in the local community, where neighbours and friends can exchange items they no longer use. From clothes and books to kitchen gadgets and toys, swaps are an exciting way to refresh your things without spending a penny – you might end up with something you never thought you’d own! Set up tables or sections for different categories and let guests browse through what others bring. Not only does this foster a sense of community, but it also ensures that preloved items find a new home without being thrown away. Naturally, people should only bring items in good condition, and should swap for something of a similar value.

Spring Cleaning

Use National Old Stuff Day as motivation to deep clean and declutter your home, going room from room and separating items into keep, donate, and sell piles. The ‘sell’ items will be ideal for your swap shop, and anything that’s left over could be sold on marketplaces such as eBay, Depop or Vinted, to make a little extra cash. Give back by donating some of your possessions to a charity close to your heart, and the things on your keep pile can be placed back into your freshly decluttered home – maybe even in a new place now there’s more room!

Pop-Up Upcycling & Repairs

For the creatively inclined, consider hosting an upcycling and repairing day. This gives guests the chance
to transform their old items into something new, either with a fresh coat of paint or by fixing something that otherwise would’ve been thrown away. Make mason jar vases or lanterns, try your hand at decorating an old plant pot, or for the more skilled among us, sew up an old piece of clothing or swap loose or wobbly furniture legs with something more stable.

National Old Stuff Day

By celebrating National Old Stuff Day, you’ll not only declutter your life but also promote sustainable practices and connect with your community. In 2025 it’s out with the old, and in with the new!
