Summer solstice marks the longest day of the year and the start of summer, so when better to throw a garden party? Here’s our guide on how to throw a Midsummer Night’s Dream inspired soiree to remember.

Solstice Settings

A garden or patio is ideal, but a rooftop will work too in a city setting. The more natural feel to your party location, the better. Set up a dinner party table underneath gorgeous greenery and or fake it till you make it with false foliage and florals. As an ode to the summertime sun, light up your space by hanging string lights to set the mood and by scattering around candlesticks and tea lights.

Light Bites

Summer solstice is all about feeling the love and celebrating summer, so choose sharing food such as pizza with fresh, seasonal toppings like peaches, pineapple, and heirloom tomatoes.

Dress to Impress

Wear the colours of the sun – think red, gold, orange and yellow. If you fancy sparkling in the firelight when the sky turns dark, opt for sequins or a glittery garment. Flower crowns are a definite essential!

Traditional Activities

Summer solstice celebrates nature and the sun, which dictates the rhythms of the natural world. During this time people tend to pick flowers to craft wreaths that would, typically, be placed upon a maypole. Honour this tradition by decorating your party with fresh flowers or leafy wreaths.

A popular ritual was the lighting of fires, signalling the impending start of shorter days. Be sure to light a bonfire or hand out sparklers when it gets dark. End the night with a spot of star gazing, surrounded by friends and family.
